OneSubsea Inaugurates New Underwater Development Facility in Balikpapan, Indonesia

Global technology company SLB has announced an investment in the latest underwater development facility from OneSubsea located in Balikpapan, Indonesia. This investment marks a significant step as part of SLB’s commitment to supporting the growth of the offshore industry and energy sector in Indonesia, including the development of underwater infrastructure.

The goal is to establish a facility that will serve as a center for underwater field development services, including renewal and repair services for subsea equipment. To support this initiative, SLB OneSubsea has started empowering local workers and leveraging regional expertise to accelerate competency development for future business activities.

Strategically located at Pertamina Port and Logistics Shorebase Tanjung Batu (PSTB), the facility occupies an area of 3,000 square meters and showcases SLB OneSubsea’s dedication and commitment to supporting current and future underwater projects safely and efficiently. The construction of the facility will commence shortly after the opening ceremony.

The inauguration event was attended by the Mayor of Balikpapan Rahmad Masúd, SKK MIGAS Exploitation Deputy Prof Taufan Marhaendrajana, client representatives, business partners, as well as SLB and OneSubsea management.

“This facility’s presence is not only a source of pride for the people of Balikpapan but also a crucial milestone in supporting the development of Indonesia’s strategic sector that determines the sustainability of natural gas production in Indonesia,” said Rahmad Masud. Prof. Taufan also emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders for the industry’s progress.

“This requires cooperation from all parties, from the Central Government, Local Government, KKKS, Private Sector as providers of goods and services to the farthest end of the supply chain. Tight integration and collaboration while ensuring flexibility within the good governance corridor are necessary for the implementation and management of national projects,” added Prof. Taufan.

“The inauguration marks our strong commitment to accelerating the development of Indonesia’s national gas production strategy,” said SLB’s Managing Director in Indonesia, Nurzhan Ongaltayev. “The development of underwater bases plays a crucial role, and this new facility will be a vital platform for capacity development and skill enhancement, empowering local talent to play a role in significant growth opportunities for the country.”

Additionally, this investment demonstrates SLB’s support for Indonesia’s ambition in the offshore industry through innovation, strengthening local presence through partnerships with clients and local suppliers.
