Vincencia Toma, a resident of Radamata Village in Kota Tambulaka District, South West Sumba, shared how the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program has positively impacted her daily life. Being a pregnant mother with a four-year-old child, Vincencia mentioned the significant difference the program has made for her and her child. Previously, they would have whatever they could find for breakfast, but since the MBG program started, her child now finishes every meal provided. For the past nine days, Vincencia has been receiving free meals and highlighted the delicious taste and nutritional value of the food for her child. She also noted how the program has helped in establishing better eating habits for her family, simplifying food distribution throughout the day.
As a nine-month-pregnant woman, Vincencia is one of many pregnant and breastfeeding mothers benefiting directly from the MBG nutrition service kitchens in her village. She commended the government’s initiative in offering free and nutritious meals to rural mothers and children, emphasizing the positive impact on ensuring kids receive meals rich in protein and variety. Vincencia expressed her optimism for the program’s continuity, recognizing its vital role in enhancing community health.
Under the management of the Tambolaka Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG), the MBG program in Southwest Sumba focuses on providing meals to schools and health posts, particularly targeting pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers. By utilizing locally sourced ingredients and emphasizing balanced nutrition, the program aims to address health challenges and reduce stunting rates in the region.
